Application of tactile/kinesthetic stimulation in preterm infants: a systematic review

Pepino, V. C., & Mezzacappa, M. A. (2015). Application of tactile/kinesthetic stimulation in preterm infants: a systematic review. Jornal de Pediatria, 91(3), 213–233.

This systematic review evaluates the effect of tactile/kinesthetic stimulation on weight gain in preterm infants. 31 studies are included in the review. All of the studies included in the review reported positive effects of manual stimulation in preterm infants, such as faster weight gain, shorter hospital stays, and better behaviour. However, higher quality studies are needed that use a standard application of treatment and that systematically report adverse events during the procedure.
